Video about Kiev

Kiev is one of the biggest cities in Europe. It is the capital of Ukraine, its administrative, economic, scientific, cultural and educational center. This vibrant city with population of over 3 million people is located on the banks of the Dnieper River.

The national currency of Ukraine is hryvnia.

It is preferable to bring either US dollars or European euros with you. These can be changed at exchange points around the city. Make sure your paper currencies are crisp and new looking. Rumpled, torn and written-on paper currencies are usually rejected. Avoid changing money with private individuals.

Credit cards

Personal checks do not exist in Ukraine, but major credit cards are generally accepted in Kiev. Traveller’s checks can be cashed in a number of banks. However, do not rely solely on credit cards or traveller’s checks. Cash is preferred.

History of Kiev

Kiev (Kyiv in Ukrainian language) is said to derive from the name of Kyi, one of four legendary founders of the city (brothers Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv and sister Lybid). Kiev is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe with more than 1,500-year history. In the 10th-12th centuries, Kiev was a political and cultural capital of Kyivan Rus, a medieval state being a cradle of modern Ukrainian civilization.

Kiev is a city of invaluable historical and cultural monuments that are on the World Heritage list. The most renowned landmarks include: St. Sophia Cathedral with outstanding mosaics and frescoes dating back to the 11th century, Kiev-Perchersk Lavra featuring several monasteries and cathedrals, Golden Gate of Kiev dating back to 1037, Andriivskyi descent being the first street of the ancient Kiev with St. Andrew baroque church, the magnificent 19th-century St. Volodymyr Cathedral, and many other attractions.

One more interesting fact about Keiv: it is truly regarded as one of the greenest cities in Europe. It is said that one can walk from one end of Kiev to the other in the summertime without leaving the shade of its many trees. Its beautiful landscapes, parks and gardens charm and captivate. Take a walk through the ancient streets of this scenic city, feel its unique beauty and the spirit of its past. Friendly Kiev residents will be delighted to introduce Ukrainian culture to their foreign guests.
Stay in Kiev will for sure become one of your most memorable experiences.
